| yay 230 am... lame-o weekend, first story due for the eyeopener tomorrow night though. Covered the Ryerson vs U of T hockey game -- and there's something so odd about being a sports reporter... waiting down in the rink for some goofy jocks to come and give you a stupid quote for your story. I'm used to being the one in the dressing room, not the nerd sitting outside with a notebook. "meh! excuse me coach, talk to meeeee" *sigh*
I'll do this gay thing meyrinkydink posted cause I'm bored.
1) Using band names, spell out your first name:
Jimmy Eat World A Perfect Circle Mudvayne Earshot Sevendust
Good thing there are no X's in my name... only letter there's no band for. Which gives me an idea for the next time I have to come up with names a band I'm in.
2) Have you ever had a song written about you?
No, but written many.
3) What song makes you cry?
Hrmmmmm, nothing does that on a regular basis (thank god). Finch, letters to you.
4) What song makes you happy?
Days of the New, Enemy
5) What do you like to listen to before bed?
Something with a sweet, simple acoustic guitar track. Cold, Wasted Years.
6) Name a song by Coal Chamber:
I have Loco and Sway in my playlist... but I'll name Shock the Monkey!
7) Who was your idol when you were younger?
Cobain
8) First album you ever bought?
Laff... I listened to strange stuff for a 10 year old Guns and Roses, Use your illusions Metallica, Ride the lightning Megadeath, So far, so good... so what coulda also been other crap like Anthrax or something
9) Name a song that reminds you of someone and why:
Matthew Good Band, Inescapable Us. Last ex-girlfriend... working the midnight shift solo through summer '00, playing that song on the radio, carving her intials into the picnic table outside, smoking a cigar as the sun came up. | comments: Leave a comment |

| Wow. I'm back home for xmas, chillin' in BC (yay). Pretty boring so far, most of my friends are tied up at work or are out of town. That's ok; get to take care of some of the aforementioned internship applications.
I just finished watching Matrix Revolutions (downloaded it, vowed not to spend any money after paying to see Reloaded in theatre) and that is seriously one of the worst films I've ever seen. People have said it was bad... but, really, no one quite substantiated just how bad it is. It starts with the fucking trainmaster... for no particular reason. What a pile of shit... I'll let this other review speak for me:
Charlotte Observer / Lawrence Toppman: Without a philosophical payoff, without characters whose relationships resonate in our hearts, without explanations for situations that beg for explanations, what are we left with? To quote another great writer of battle scenes: "a tale full of sound and fury, told by an idiot, signifying -- nothing." | comments: Leave a comment |

Did my news reporting story, talked to Bobby Hull, got in a scrum with some of the pros from the Star et al. My article's published at McKeen's -- yay me. http://mckeenshockey.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=246491

Also have internship applications to worry about... have many targets lined up.

| It's a good thing that Sympatico doesn't have a download/upload limit per month for their high speed service, but I bet they sure slow down anyone's system who downloads a ton. I'm down to running at 300 kps as opposed to the usual 1 Mps I was enjoying... but then again I've used nearly 40 GB in bandwidth this month, as opposed to the 2 GB in past months.
Perhaps my discovery of bit torrent wasn't as grand as I'd imagined! That's ok, T3 will soon be here. | comments: Leave a comment |

| music is fucked up. everyone has different tastes, and everyone is fiercely defensive about what they listen to (somewhat understandably given the intimate role it plays for most people). here is a good description of what kind of music I listen to. now, I don't expect anyone else to listen to the same stuff (that'd be boring) or if they can even tolerate it. but there's a lot of hating going on I must say. I would like nothing better than to grab a couple friends, go to this concert, have a few beers (tokes?) and jump in the pit. back home, no problem... here, I know no one who would be caught dead at that concert, but I guess that's not a problem. not intimidated by going to a concert by myself; like I said, music plays an intimate role and usually at a concert it doesn't matter who is there.
I saw three days grace in kelowna in august, and was thoroughly impressed. They did a nice rendition of Nirvana's 'School'... Adam (the lead singer) did a decent job of recreating the Cobain cowering howl. then again, if I was a music critic in the audience I suppose I would report to the masses 'He in no way replicated the essence of Cobain in his cover of the song. The entire group lacks originality and sounds like everything else that's out these days.' Which is a pile of shit. Rolling Stone (and all those towing the critic line from there) have a hate on for alt. metal. Nickelback is unoriginal trash music. Nickelback is manufactured angst rock. Wait a minute... what? Nirvana weren't always the critical darlings they eventually became (and are now revered as)... they were just another group playing Seattle trash tunes. Lo and behold there has been an entire musical movement which has followed in their footsteps (as well as those of Alice and Chains and the like) and now we have an entire genre that is considered shit.
If Nickelback's angst is manufactured, whose to say Cobain's wasn't? He went out there and put on show night after night.... how much angst is a guy supposed to have. He just bears the weight of that his whole existence? Angst is just one avenue of expression and in music, if you ask me, its a fucking good one. Well, the best one if you ask me, but that's just me. I'd rather have manufactured angst than manufactured pop diva shit. I don't think that was ever real. At least Kroeger started with something genuine, even if fame has twisted it into a money making machine. He yearns to play metal music, but he's got a record company to appease now... hence songs in the vein of 'How you remind me', one of the band's weakest songs ever, worse than most of the tracks on the EP they recorded themselves as struggling artists in Vancouver. He has made it, something none of us alt. metal guys will ever get close to... so as far as I'm concerned he doesn't owe anyone anything, the least of which is popular culture's acclaim. Fuck, he even admits he's not much of a singer... they were never trying to revolutionize music, just make a living rocking out like a garage band does. Why anyone would shit on them for that I have no idea.
If Nickelback really did sound like everything else, I'd be a happy guy.
My cousin BJ just said "I bet they love those sell out wannabe talentless dribble on the radio these days"
Well no shit. | comments: Leave a comment |

This is my ax that I've got with me in T.O., although mine is red (much prettier). wait, you can see it in the background in my pic there. Cost me a ton way back when, still worth about $1100 still even though I treat it like crap and take it to the beach and the pickup system crys. Sigh, no one to play with here...

It's crazy, moved all that way for his 'career'. Who knew we're old enough for that shit already?
I'm flying home on the 13th - can't wait. Have a ton of people to see and things to do in the few short weeks. this song makes me miss my bass guitar
